"achenium (a-kē'ni-um), n.; pl. achenia (-ä). [NL., also written achanium, irreg. (cf.Gr. αχανηζ, not gaping) <a-priv. (https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alpha_privativum) αχαίνειν, gape, akin to E. yawn, q. v.] 1. In bot., a small, dry and hard, one-celled, one-seeded, indehiseent fruit; strictly, a single and free earpel of this character, as in the buttercup, avens, etc., but extended to all similar fruits resulting from a compound ovary, even when invested with an adnate calyx, as in the order Compositæ. Also written achene, achænium, akene, and akenium.-2- [cap.] entom., a genus of beetles. W. E. Leach."
